A new study from BYU’s Wheatley Institute, published this week, surveyed 2,431 U.S. adults ages 18–30 in committed relationships and found that about 15% regularly interact romantically with AI chatbots, with over 20% having experimented at some point. The research highlights secrecy around these interactions—many partners are unaware or only partially informed—and links the trend to reduced relationship stability and emotional confusion. Experts from the Institute for Family Studies note that while AI offers an “illusion of control” through one-sided validation, it lacks the reciprocity, sacrifice, and growth of real human bonds, raising important ethical questions for tech and faith communities alike.
