BYU researchers and students in the MATRIX lab are collecting speech and text data from BYU-Pathway Worldwide participants to train AI translation tools for dozens of underrepresented languages. The project has already gathered over 750,000 sentences and 2,200 hours of audio across 30 languages, with goals to expand to 50 by year-end—directly supporting gospel accessibility and cultural preservation.
